Muhyiddin Finally relented and resigned as Prime Minister of Malaysia.

Malaysians in general will not miss him

Muhyiddin Yassin, the 8th Prime Minister of Malaysia who came to power after toppling Mahathir Mohamed as the 7th Prime Minister has now himself been toppled by UMNO. Muhyiddin became Prime Minister of Malaysia on 2nd March 2020 when he pulled the political party Bersatu (PPBM) out of the ruling government PakatanHarapan.  He was the President of the party and Mahathir was the Chairman of the party.

Muhyiddin outfoxed the old fox Mahathir

by toppling him as the 7th Prime Minister.

When Muhyiddin pulled out, the entire government lost its majority in Parliament which forced Mahathir to resign as the Prime Minister. Muhyiddin also teamed up with one Azmin Ali, who pulled out of Keadilan (PKR) which is Anwar Ibrahim’s party.

Azmin Ali who betrayed his long time

boss, Anwar Ibrahim.

Muhyiddin teamed up with the beleaguered party UMNO and with the Islamist Party, PAS to form a new government called Perikatan Nasional (PN).   From his first day in office, Muhyiddin’s government has been called a “backdoor government”and has been rejected by the majority of Malaysians. However, Muhyiddin held on to power by taking advantage of the covid 19 situation by declaring emergency rule and also by ensuring that the Malaysian parliament is effectively suspended. In this way, he was able to deflect legitimate challenge in Parliament.

Muhyiddin’s17 month old government will be known in Malaysia’s political history as “Kerajaan Gagal” or failed government. It had failed in many respects, especially in its handling of the covid19 health crisis.  Muhyiddin’s selfish insistence to hold on to power through his unstable government has also affected investor confidence in the country, the effects of which will be long term.

Finally, karma played a cruel trick on him by getting him ousted by his own political partner, UMNO. The new 9th Prime Minister of Malaysia is UMNO’s choice, Ismail Sabri because all other prominent leaders of UMNO face corruption charges. Though Ismail Sabri is touted to be a lame duck Prime Minister, it is UMNO back to the driver’s seat. So, Muhyiddin got a taste of what he did to Mahathir 17 months ago by being ousted. It is speculated that if a new government not friendly to PN was formed, corruption investigations into the use of the huge funds spent in the name of fighting covid19 would have been commenced.

Ismail Sabri, Malaysia’s accidental 9th Prime Minister.

Muhyiddin will be remembered as a “traitor” to his political partners. Malaysian political history records that he had betrayed both Abdullah Badawi and NajibRazak before. These are previous Prime Ministers he had worked under. He will also be remembered as a failed democrat in the country and for running a failed government which irretrievably affected the progress of Malaysia for 17 months. And the worse of his crime in the Malay eyes is his shameless use of religious sentiments portraying himself as a pious Muslim.

Sayed Akhbar Jamil.
