Just when Najib is stronger, comes two baggages - Malaysian AG
and Anti Corruption Chief !
Since Raja Petra, a portal owner of Malaysia Today revealed three weeks
ago about the strange relationship between a member of parliament, Abdul Azeez
Abdul Rahim and Malaysian Attorney General, Apandi Ali, the anti corruption
Chief Dzulkiflee Ahmad has now come under scandalous spotlight.
Apandi had threatened to sue Raja Petra for his accusations against
Apandi hinting that he has a corrupt relationship with Azeez. Maybe due to the legal threat, Raja Petra
appears to have back tracked and gave the impression that his sources may have
got the story wrong. However, the truth is out there - Apandi is a board member
of Tabung Haji, a very cash rich government linked agency that arranges
Malaysian pilgrims to Mecca. A simple search on the Tabung haji website
will prove this. Azeez is the Chairman. This relationship alone will
discredit Apandi as an independent Attorney General.
Najib has come out strong since 2015 politically after surviving a
potential political coup by his own then deputy and a few members in the
enforcement agency. Ironically, including the Malaysian Attorney general office
and the Anti Corruption Commission. Now, the scandal ridden heads of these two
agencies may bring his credibility and political ratings down in the face of
the coming general election. Will Najib clear the obstacle before he faces the
election or in his known style try to push it under the carpet and let it
become an election issue?
Many analysts in Malaysia believe that this will brew into a major
election issue for Najib if he does not replace them both, especially the AG.
Najib needs to have less of this type of credibility of his agencies issues and
needs to move fast. Many Malaysians are already asking if Najib is playing into
the AG's hands for some reason or other. Of course this may well be perception
but this is all that counts in politics.
Will Najib be wise to create a perception of credibility by appointing
the right candidates without any baggages who will be acceptable to the
Malaysian public? Only time will tell and time is something
Najib does not have much of.
